BBS Diversity Overview

  • 00:03I'm professor in the Department of
  • 00:05Pharmacology and I'm director of
  • 00:07Minority affairs for the Yale Program
  • 00:09in Biological and Biomedical Sciences,
  • 00:11the BBS program.
  • 00:13The BBS program is committed to
  • 00:16maintaining a diverse student environment.
  • 00:18In order to accomplish this,
  • 00:20we provide a variety of
  • 00:22initiatives and resources,
  • 00:23and I would like to tell you about them.
  • 00:25In this short video.
  • 00:27Our goal is to encourage and foster
  • 00:30a culture where students from all
  • 00:32ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • 00:34can interact and collaborate with
  • 00:36Yale faculty in order to solve the
  • 00:38most challenging scientific problems.
  • 00:42We firmly believe that our diverse
  • 00:45student body is conducive to
  • 00:47enhancing your scientific training
  • 00:49and educational experience.
  • 00:51A diverse student body results
  • 00:53in greater innovation,
  • 00:55creativity,
  • 00:55and discovery which culminates in
  • 00:59higher quality scientific research.
  • 01:01This is becoming ever more important
  • 01:04in today's highly collaborative
  • 01:05and team driven scientific arena.
  • 01:10We are committed to our diverse student
  • 01:12body and we accomplish this through
  • 01:15our outstanding faculty mentors,
  • 01:17events and seminars tailored
  • 01:19to our diverse student body.
  • 01:22These resources are provided
  • 01:24throughout your graduate career.
  • 01:26We also have student LED,
  • 01:28peer-to-peer diversity initiatives.
  • 01:32The BBS program works with the Office
  • 01:35for Graduate Student Development
  • 01:36and Diversity to coordinate a
  • 01:39number of events and workshops.
  • 01:41If you get an offer,
  • 01:43the office for Graduate Student Development
  • 01:45and Nine Diversity hosts the second look.
  • 01:47Diversity days.
  • 01:50The Office for Graduate Student
  • 01:53Development and Diversity also
  • 01:55hosts the transitions program.
  • 01:57This program provides support for the
  • 02:00early transition to Graduate School.
  • 02:02It does so by providing a diversity
  • 02:05orientation day that addresses
  • 02:07topics such as imposter syndrome,
  • 02:09navigating the PhD and finances.
  • 02:14You'd also discusses issues
  • 02:15such as student mentorship,
  • 02:16support,
  • 02:17and provides academic and
  • 02:19professional development workshops.
  • 02:24We provide support for our LGBTQ
  • 02:27communities through Ostem are
  • 02:29out in science, technology,
  • 02:31and engineering and mathematics group.
  • 02:35There are also a number of
  • 02:37cultural centers such as the
  • 02:39Afro American Cultural Center,
  • 02:41Asian American Cultural Center,
  • 02:43Latino Cultural Center,
  • 02:45Native American Cultural centers,
  • 02:46as well as many others.
  • 02:51I'd just like to tell you about a new
  • 02:54initiative at the Yale BBS program.
  • 02:56We call it the Yale BBS,
  • 02:58diversity and Inclusion collective.
  • 03:00It is a student LED platform uniquely
  • 03:03designed for the Yale BBS program.
  • 03:06The collective promotes inclusivity
  • 03:09and supports underrepresented
  • 03:11students in the LBBS program.
  • 03:14The collective impellers and strengthens
  • 03:16the BBS graduate student community
  • 03:19throughout the length of their PhD careers,
  • 03:21and we achieve this through a student driven
  • 03:25model with programs and initiatives to
  • 03:28support underrepresented groups of students.
  • 03:31YB DIC has three branches,
  • 03:33student engagement,
  • 03:35student empowerment and student enhancement,
  • 03:39and you can find a branch that meets
  • 03:41your needs as well as participate
  • 03:43in the running of the branches.
  • 03:46There are opportunities for all students to
  • 03:49get involved in local outreach initiatives
  • 03:51in and around the New Haven area.
  • 03:54There is also the Yale Saknis chapter,
  • 03:56which hosts a number of
  • 03:59events throughout the year.
  • 04:00Both the Yale sadness Chapter and YB DIC
  • 04:03offer the opportunity to participate
  • 04:05in attending national recruitment
  • 04:08conferences such as Abrahams and Sadness.
  • 04:13Finally, there are resources for
  • 04:16students with disabilities and
  • 04:18our goal is to provide a full
  • 04:21experience for all of our students.
  • 04:24These are a few of the diversity
  • 04:27related programs and resources
  • 04:29that we offer in the BBS program.
