Biography
Dr. Timothy Cheung earned his PhD in Cell Biology & Anatomy and DPM degrees at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science. During that time, he worked at the Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR) and the Kim lab. Under the supervision of Hongkyun Kim, PhD, he identified and dissected the complex degradation mechanism of the ubiquitous Big Potassium (BK) channel. Dr. Cheung's work revealed the elegant coordination of Endoplasmic Reticulum-Associated Degradation (ERAD) and proteasome level regulation in BK channel degradation. Moreover, he successfully restored BK channel levels by utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing technology, other genetic manipulation systems, and pharmaceutical inhibition, establishing a strong foundation for the molecular physiology of diseases, including peripheral neuropathy, and providing optimistic results on therapeutic potential. His current research interests include diabetic foot ulcers and infections, osteomyelitis, Charcot neuroarthropathy, limb salvage & preservation, peripheral neuropathy, surgical biomechanics, and various techniques and technologies in podiatric/foot & ankle surgery.
