AACH ENRICH Healthcare Communication Course: "Diverse Voices, Common Vision: Fostering Effective Healthcare Communication Through Inclusion"
The American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH) is co-locating its ENRICH course and Research and Teaching Forum programs for the first time this year! Holding these two events at the same time and place will strengthen the sense of community across researchers and teachers in the field of healthcare communication.
ENRICH Course:
The ENRICH course is an intensive 4-day course (Thursday 1pm to Sunday noon) for anyone interested in improving their healthcare communication skills and/or their ability to teach these skills. Plenary sessions will address aspects of healthcare communication and patient engagement. Participants can choose one of four workshop tracks to delve more deeply into an aspect of healthcare communication: relationship-centered communication, communicating in teams, shared decision-making, or, coaching.
A significant portion of participant time is spent in supportive small groups working on skills and personal awareness. Different small groups use specific techniques to increase skills and personal awareness: some use narrative medicine, some use a case-based approach similar to Balint groups, and some integrate more than one technique. Participants choose their preferred group style. There is a faculty:learner ratio of ~1:7. Small groups are usually inter-professional. There is also opportunity for intact teams to participate together and improve their team communication. This course is intended for those teaching or coaching healthcare communication, clinical leaders, clinicians interested in honing their communication skills, clinicians who would benefit from an intensive focus on their communication skills, And health professions students
Because the small groups are such an important part of the experience and contributions from each member is vital, participation during each day of the course is vital.
Joint Sessions:
ENRICH and Forum participants will convene for joint keynote sessions, special interest groups, and a poster session, fostering interaction and connection with a wide variety of healthcare communication colleagues.
