Matthew State, MD, PhD, has been appointed the next chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. State will serve as chair and director of the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute effective March 18, 2013.

Dr. State is the Donald J. Cohen Professor at the Child Study Center and professor of psychiatry and of genetics at Yale School of Medicine, deputy chair for research in Yale's Department of Psychiatry, and the co-director of Yale's Neurogenetics Program.

"We will miss Matt. He is a good friend, an exceptional scientist, and an important contributor to life in our department,” said John H. Krystal, MD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Yale. “We congratulate him and are pleased that he will have this exciting new opportunity.”

Dr. State's research focuses on identifying and characterizing genes and genetic mechanisms involved in neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood.

Yale is widely respected for training leaders in the field of psychiatry. A recent review suggests that Dr. State will be the 30th psychiatry department chair to emerge from Yale.
