Biography

Edward Schwartz, MSW, LCSW, is a clinical social worker for the Ambulatory Palliative Care team at Smilow Cancer Hospital. Prior to transitioning into the field of social work, Ed ran his own business for over two decades as a graphic designer overseeing projects for multinational clients. He subsequently decided to pursue his master's in social work at New York University, where he was the recipient of a 4-year post-graduate fellowship in palliative and end-of-life care. He went on to complete post-master's certificates at NYU in Palliative and End-of-Life Care and Clinical Approaches to Addiction. More recently, Ed completed the Zelda Foster Leadership Program in Palliative and End-of-Life Care at NYU, where his capstone project explored the challenges of managing pain in cancer survivors with a history of addiction.

Since embarking on clinical practice, Ed has specialized predominantly in palliative and hospice care, bereavement services, and psychosocial support for those with advanced cancer. He joined the Palliative Care team in 2018, where he facilitates the Pancreatic Cancer Support Group and the Behavioral Meaning Centered Psychotherapy Support Group. In addition to his clinical work, Ed continues to practice as an artist. The themes he explores in his painting frequently intersect with the interests that have motivated him to work in hospice and palliative care, with his painting acting as a bridge between his identities as clinician and artist.
