Jeanette Tetrault, MD, FACP, FASAM, professor of medicine (general medicine), Yale School of Medicine, and chronic disease epidemiology, Yale School of Public Health, was awarded the John P. McGovern Award for Excellence in Medical Education at the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction (AMERSA) annual conference in November 2023. John P. McGovern, MD, has been recognized for his achievements as an allergist, investor, and philanthropist, along with his notable contributions to substance use research. The award honors an individual who has contributed substantially to substance use education and research, and represents AMERSA’s highest honor. She was nominated by Patrick O’Connor, MD, MPH, MACP, who presented her with the award at the conference.

In his nomination letter, O’Connor noted, “Jeanette has made extraordinary efforts towards medical education, creating an addiction medicine curriculum for both the Yale Schools of Medicine and Nursing, and leading multiple projects on multidisciplinary education on substance use disorder, locally, nationally, and internationally. She is also the founding Director of the Yale Addiction Medicine Fellowship program and serves as the president for the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine.”

Tetrault has also made great contributions in addiction medicine research, studying the contribution of substance use to various medical co-morbidities, such as opioid use in HIV and hepatitis C infection. Additionally, she has published numerous studies on implementing addiction medicine curricula into undergraduate and graduate medical training programs.

The award humbled Tetrault. "AMERSA's mission is to improve health and well-being through leadership and advocacy in substance use education, research, clinical care, and policy. Receiving this award from an organization whose mission aligns with my career goals is overwhelmingly humbling and means so much to me professionally and personally. I am deeply grateful to AMERSA for this recognition," she said.
