Carlos Mena-Hurtado, MD, associate professor of medicine and co-director of Yale’s Vascular Medicine Outcomes (VAMOS) program, received a Clinical Coordinating Center Rally award for outstanding leadership in the CREST-2 trial.

Mena-Hurtado is the principal investigator of the CREST-2 or Carotid Revascularization and Medical Management for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial at Yale New Haven Hospital. Thomas G. Brott, MD, from the Mayo Clinic presented the certificate.

“CREST-2 will help determine the effectiveness of intensive medical management alone compared with revascularization procedures. I am honored that Yale New Haven Hospital is participating in this research study to reduce stroke and death rates for our patients,” said Mena-Hurtado.

The carotid artery provides a steady flow of blood from the heart to the brain, face, and neck. Carotid artery disease occurs when a build-up of fatty substances and plaque clogs the artery. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke-sponsored research study will identify strategies to reduce the risk of stroke and the best method for stroke prevention. The multi-center randomized controlled trial is currently enrolling 2,480 participants with either asymptomatic or symptomatic stenosis from the United States, Canada, Spain, and Israel.
