Yale Internal Medicine Residency Writers’ Workshop Celebrates 15th Year

On Thursday, January 24, Yale residents from the Departments of Internal Medicine, Medicine/Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Neurology presented their essays to faculty, residents, staff, and medical students. This event was the conclusion of the program’s first all-woman workshop and the first session where two spots were offered to an intern and a fellow.

Mentored by Anna Reisman, MD and Lisa Sanders, MD, FACP, the writers spent two days in October writing and discussing the craft of narrative writing. Last week, the authors read their pieces to the Yale community. Also in attendance was January 24 Writing and Medicine Grand Rounds speaker Rita Charon, MD, PhD, professor of medicine at Columbia University and founder and executive director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia.

“The dedicated time for writing during residency was fabulous, as was the opportunity to connect with house staff across disciplines,” said Hannah Rosenblum, MD. Along with Megan Baker, MD, Rosenblum co-edited the publication Capsules.

The annual workshop is designed for novice writers, although experienced writers will be able to further craft their skills.

The Department of Internal Medicine established the Writers' Workshop in 2003 to create an opportunity for residents to enhance their powers of observation and to learn how to write essays and stories. To learn more, visit Writers’ Workshop.
