Global Health & Equity Distinction Pathway News Update for August 10, 2020

August 10, 2020

Greetings, all –

Tomorrow marks the end of the Democratic presidential primary season for 2020, with Connecticut bringing up the rear as the last state or territory to hold a primary or caucus. And the Democratic and Republican parties will both hold their national convention over the last two weeks of August. So - regardless of your political affiliation - it is time for us and for our patients to look toward November 3rd:

  • For the global health community: The Consortium of Universities for Global Health is launching a new campaign entitled, “Global Health Votes.” I’ll be forwarding an email with more info on that shortly, but the first step is checking to be sure that you are registered (https://www.whenweallvote.org/check-registration/) and registering yourself if necessary (https://www.whenweallvote.org/register/).
  • For our patients: As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago - to help healthcare providers talk to their patients about the importance of voting, the nonpartisan organization Vo+er has put together a Healthy Democracy Kit (https://vot-er.org/healthy-democracy-kit/) which providers can order for free. This kit includes a badge that can fit behind your ID badge on a lanyard, and which contains a QR code that patients can scan and get linked to a voter registration site. They also include some helpful information about how to talk to patients about the importance of voting (https://vot-er.org/scripts/).

Upcoming Local Events: August

  • Monday, August 10th @ 12-1pm: The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai presents their second national Chat for Change, “White Supremacy Culture: what is it and how am I contributing to it?” To join the conversation, use the Zoom Meeting ID: 96348365054
  • Wednesday, August 12th @ 1-2pm: Physicians for Human Rights presents - The Impact of COVID-19 on the Elderly. In the United States, adults over age 65 account for only 16 percent of the population, but 80 percent of COVID-19 deaths. In the absence of a vaccine, and as COVID-19 cases surge, elderly and nursing home populations continue to be severely, disproportionately affected by the pandemic and the isolation it has caused. In this webinar, PHR will host a conversation on the grave impacts of COVID-19 on these populations, covering missed opportunities in prevention and treatment, models for success, and next steps needed to reduce risk and protect basic human rights as the pandemic rages on.
