With "Creating a Great Place to Work," as the theme, the 3rd Annual Faculty Retreat took place on September 17, and asked Faculty and leaders to brainstorm and prioritize actionable ways to improve Yale Surgery culture and climate. The result is a 7-point punch list, with opportunities to socialize given primo importance.

  • Create more forums and events that encourage socializing.
  • Leverage scribes and share Epic hacks.
  • Feed the team during “off” hours.
  • Promote work-life balance; limited meetings to work-day hours.
  • Enhance the cleanliness of offices.
  • Create a Faculty lounge and touch-down/rest space.
  • Make Faculty contact information easily accessible.

"Interestingly, but not surprisingly, it's really basic things that surfaced as mission critical to creating a great place to work. Life as a surgeon is stressful; folks want to feel like have the support of a family that gets it. Little things like having a meal delivered when you’re running on 18-hours empty, or a clean desk to work at — these things matter,” said Executive Vice Chair of Operations, Dr. Mehra Golshan. Plans to implement each of the recommendations at both the Department and Division levels are now underway. The planning committee paases the baton to Dr. Golshan, who, with administrative support from the Chief of Staff, and key Faculty input, will assume responsibility for executing on the “great place to work” recommendations at the Department level. A formal action plan and timeline for deliverables will be shared in October.
