Affording Medical School

Concerns about the cost of attending medical school and repaying loans play a large part in deciding which school to attend. Yale School of Medicine (YSM) is committed to providing as much financial aid as possible to students with calculated need.

Definitions:

• Financial aid: funding or assistance provided to help individuals cover the cost of higher education.
• Loan: money borrowed from a government or private lender to pay for higher education and related living expenses which must be paid back with interest, though repayment is typically deferred while the borrower is still enrolled in school.
• Scholarship: funds awarded to students to help pay for their education that do not need to be repaid.

Families with a wide range of incomes qualify for YSM’s need-based aid.

MD students may qualify for financial aid in the form of loans and scholarship based on a family’s calculated financial need.

Students must apply for financial aid each year. Prospective students are notified of their eligibility after admission. Notifications for continuing students are sent out on a rolling basis beginning in mid-May.

Beginning in the fall of 2027, the expected parent contribution is waived for households with an annual total income of $150,000 or less and typical assets. Families who make over $150,000 may still qualify for financial aid based on their financial situation.
