All medical schools utilize local and non-local clinical sites as clinical training venues for their students. Not only is this necessary to accommodate the large number of learners entering our clinical spaces on a daily basis, but it also provides important clinical exposure to a variety of health care settings and patient populations. We work hard to fairly distribute assignments of non-local sites across students.
At Yale School of Medicine, the following are considered local clinical sites and are not taken into account when spreading out travel to more distant sites:
- YNHH York Street Campus
- YNHH St. Raphael Campus
- Yale Psychiatric Hospital
- West Haven VA hospital
- Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center– all locations
- Fair Haven Community Health Center – all locations
- All clinical practice sites in New Haven, Hamden, North Haven, Guilford, Branford, North Branford, Orange, Milford, West Haven, East Haven, Woodbridge, and Derby
The following are considered non-local clinical sites that we work hard to balance across students:
- Bridgeport Hospital
- Middlesex Hospital
- Lawrence and Memorial Hospital
- Greenwich Hospital
- All clinical practice sites in towns not listed above. For our clerkship rotations, MCE, and ILCE, we have recently eliminated ambulatory sites that are greater than 35 miles away.
Please note, the Yale School of Medicine student budget includes a significant amount for travel to rotations ($3,418 each year) during the clerkship period. Students who are already receiving financial aid can request an additional loan to cover this cost if it is not yet funded. Students who have not applied for financial aid who need further assistance should submit a financial aid application by June 1, 2024. The Office of Financial Aid can work with you in this regard.
We also have a Student Emergency Aid Fund that is managed by the Office of Student Affairs for students experiencing acute financial hardship.
