Hi Everyone,
Wow, is it cold! Outside, it’s 7 degrees, and my yard is a land of ice and snow. But inside, the coffee is hot, my space heater’s humming, and my toes are wrapped in wooly socks.
It’s a busy day. I’m finally finishing the rank lists. It’s been a challenge: the applicants are so talented that choosing seems impossible. But the scores are in, and I’ve obsessed long enough. Since we’re participating in the Rank Order List Lock, there will be no revisions allowed after tomorrow. Later this month, we have over a hundred applicants visiting for “second looks” (I won’t know who until the list is locked), and we’ll be treating them to tours, panels, and yummy food. Hopefully, the weather will warm by then.
Tomorrow morning, we’re launching our 2027-28 Chief Resident selection. Our PGY2 class is replete with fantastic clinicians, investigators, and educators. A Chief year would give them an unparalleled opportunity to serve the program and support colleagues; attend on the floors and in the clinic; develop teaching, negotiation, organizational, and leadership skills; and learn how a residency runs. We depend on our Chiefs to be advocates, advisors, and visionaries. We’ll use your nominations to choose candidates to be interviewed. All PGY2s are eligible except short trackers and those who have bowed out. Before you vote, please read what I wrote last year about leadership. The survey should arrive in your inbox tomorrow morning.
Also tomorrow morning, residents and core faculty will be asked to complete the all-important annual ACGME survey. Again, you can read what I wrote last year about the survey, which allows us to show the ACGME that we’re meeting our commitment to provide you with the resources, education, supervision, feedback, and learning environment you need to become full-fledged internists. The ACGME uses the results to determine program accreditation, and we use the results to fix what needs fixing. Later today, I’ll share more information to review before you begin the survey.
With all that happening, I’ll be starting three weeks on service tomorrow: a week in the MICU (hello Green Team!), then two weeks of Step Down.
Enjoy your Sunday, everyone. I’m going out for a winter hike before finishing up the Rank Lists and leaving for a Super Bowl party. Enjoy the Game!
Mark
