- 00:00Hello. My name is Jeremy
- 00:02Moller.
- 00:02I am the associate dean
- 00:04for the MD curriculum at
- 00:05Yale School of Medicine.
- 00:07In this video, I will
- 00:09guide you through some of
- 00:10the important elements of our
- 00:11curriculum that we have designed
- 00:12to educate and nurture our
- 00:14students to be creative leaders
- 00:16in medicine and science while
- 00:17promoting their curiosity in an
- 00:19inclusive environment.
- 00:22Our curriculum consists of three
- 00:24phases.
- 00:26The first phase covers the
- 00:27first year and a half
- 00:28of medical school and is
- 00:29called the pre clerkship phase.
- 00:31This period includes integrated and
- 00:33longitudinal courses focusing on the
- 00:35structure and function of the
- 00:37human body in health and
- 00:38disease.
- 00:39There are also longitudinal courses
- 00:41with a focus on population
- 00:43health and epidemiology,
- 00:45principles of medical science, and
- 00:47professionalism and ethics.
- 00:49Students learn through a variety
- 00:50of pedagogies with a special
- 00:52emphasis on interactive small groups
- 00:54that foster teamwork,
- 00:55critical thinking, and clinical reasoning.
- 00:58From the beginning, students learn
- 01:00and practice clinical skills and
- 01:02have a number of opportunities
- 01:03to work with patients.
- 01:05Following the completion of the
- 01:06first year of the curriculum
- 01:07in June, students have opportunities
- 01:09to engage in research projects
- 01:11and to be involved in
- 01:12community outreach programs.
- 01:15The second phase of the
- 01:16curriculum is known as the
- 01:18clerkship phase.
- 01:19This phase begins in January
- 01:21of the second year and
- 01:22is characterized by an immersion
- 01:24into the clinical setting as
- 01:25part of health care teams.
- 01:28This period contains four twelve
- 01:30week longitudinal
- 01:31integrated clerkships
- 01:33called the biopsychosocial
- 01:35approach to health,
- 01:37medical approach to the patient,
- 01:39surgical approach to the patient,
- 01:41and women and children's health.
- 01:43On the first day of
- 01:45each twelve week clerkship block,
- 01:47all clerkship students engage in
- 01:48a full class pre seed
- 01:50focused on topics such as
- 01:52communication,
- 01:53professionalism,
- 01:54end of life care, and
- 01:55health equity.
- 01:58The last seventeen months of
- 01:59the curriculum are called the
- 02:01advanced training period.
- 02:03During this period, students have
- 02:05great flexibility that they use
- 02:06to identify the clinical specialty
- 02:08that they will apply to
- 02:09for residency
- 02:11and to focus on advanced
- 02:12clinical training.
- 02:14This flexible period also allows
- 02:16students the opportunity to engage
- 02:18in additional research and scholarly
- 02:20activities,
- 02:21to complete their thesis,
- 02:23to take a variety of
- 02:24clinical or global health electives,
- 02:26and to devote time to
- 02:28community health advocacy.
- 02:30At the end of the
- 02:31advanced training period, students participate
- 02:33in a capstone course for
- 02:35which the entire graduating class
- 02:37comes back together to review
- 02:39important concepts and practice essential
- 02:41skills for residency.
- 02:44Capstone students also have the
- 02:46opportunity to engage in residency
- 02:47boot camps
- 02:48designed to assist them in
- 02:50the transition to residency in
- 02:51the specialty they have matched
- 02:53in.
- 02:54Finally,
- 02:55the last month of the
- 02:56ATP is a time of
- 02:57great celebration
- 02:59with graduating students putting on
- 03:00the fourth year show and
- 03:02engaging in preparations for graduation.
