1 Minute Read

The American Physiological Society presented its 2026 Physiology in Perspective Walter B. Cannon Award to Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and professor of cellular & molecular physiology.

The Cannon Award, the most prestigious award the APS bestows, honors a researcher’s lifetime achievements. Over the last four decades, Shulman, who is also co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center and investigator emeritus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, transformed understanding of type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease by uncovering the fundamental cellular defects that cause insulin resistance. His discoveries have reshaped both basic science and clinical care.
