Yale Department of Psychiatry and Child Study Center Staff Spotlight April 2023

April 03, 2023

Meet Stephen Healy and Lisa Grivalsky

In the third of a spotlight series launched in February to feature integrated business operations (IBO) and administration staff at the Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) and Department of Psychiatry, meet Stephen Healy and Lisa Grivalsky, who work on faculty and staff affairs for both departments. Congratulations to Stephen on the newest addition to the Healy family, and to Lisa for the upcoming completion of her master’s degree!

The IBO model was implemented in October 2019, when Yale School of Medicine (YSM) leadership asked each of the departmental business managers to collaborate and find opportunities for business operations staff in both departments to work more closely together. The initial collaboration led to further integration of operations in the areas of Human Resources, Faculty Affairs and Staffing Administration, Research Finance and Administration, and Clinical Finance and Administration. Each of these areas are now run inter-departmentally and the IBO model has been adopted by nearly all YSM departments.

Meet Associate Director of Faculty Affairs & Staff Administration Stephen Healy

How long have you been at Yale?

I have been at Yale for over 11 years, all within the Department of Psychiatry.

What led you to this career?

After completing an undergraduate degree in psychology, I began working as a Research Assistant in the lab of Dr. Marc Potenza. During this time, I was fortunate enough to assist in a wide range of projects mainly focused on impulsivity and impulse control disorders. While I greatly enjoyed contributing to the labs work, I ultimately decided that a career in research wasn’t for me. Wanting to stay connected to the department and its mission, I accepted a position in the department of psychiatry’s faculty affairs office, while at the same time pursuing a master’s degree in organizational leadership with a focus in human resources.

What energizes you outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family (my wife and I welcomed our second daughter in March 2023), playing guitar, kayaking, and working to perfect our homemade pizza recipe.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Kind, Funny, Optimistic

What would you like to share that might surprise your colleagues?

Prior to having kids, I played in a band that wrote, recorded, and performed live at various venues around Connecticut.

Meet Assistant Director of Faculty Affairs Lisa Grivalsky

How long have you been at Yale?

I was hired into the Yale in the Department of Pediatrics as a Senior Administrative Assistant in September of 2014. In August 2015, I became the Faculty Appointments and Promotions Coordinator and then in February 2016 transitioned to become the Faculty Affairs Coordinator for the Department of Pediatrics. Between March 2018- September 2018, I took a position as the Faculty Appointments & Promotions Coordinator for the Faculty of Arts & Sciences (FAS) Dean's Office. In September of 2018, I accepted a promotion to return to the Department of Pediatrics as the Manager of Faculty Affairs. Most recently in April of 2022, I joined the IBO as the Assistant Director of Faculty Affairs and am so thrilled to be here!

What led you to this career?

I always knew that I wanted to work in a profession that offered me a chance to help others with their career development and to find ways of improving operational processes that support the mission and goals of an organization. In my current role, I can make a positive impact by supporting the faculty, trainees, and staff members within our IBO to achieve their objectives, which, in turn, facilitates the growth and success of our organization.

What is a work-related accomplishment that made you feel proud?

One of my absolute favorite parts of my job is mentoring and coaching others. Seeing my team members be successful in their current roles and also advancing their careers and achieving their personal and professional development goals is, by far, my proudest work-related accomplishment.

What energizes you (activities, roles, hobbies, or otherwise) outside of work?

I have three boys (my oldest is 7 and my twins are almost 6), so, when I'm outside of work, most of my energy is devoted to watching them play baseball, basketball, and flag football. We love being outdoors now that the weather is getting warmer, so, if we're home, you can probably find me doing yard work or enjoying quality time with friends and family by the pool this summer.

What is an accomplishment you are proud of outside of work/your current job?

As of this upcoming May, I am ecstatic to say that I will be graduating with my Master of Science Degree in Human Resource Management. Advancing my education in the realm of HR has always been a career goal of mine, so, with the added financial support of Yale's tuition reimbursement benefit, I have finally achieved that milestone!
