Child Study Center Compassionate Care Grand Rounds: "Too Little Eating, Too Many Cases: Micro-droplets of Trust Toward Nutritional Rehabilitation"

The lifetime prevalence of anorexia nervosa in the United States is estimated to be 0.3-1%; however, some studies have shown rates as high as 4% among females. The rates among men are estimated at 0.1-0.3%. Some studies show disordered eating behavior in 13% of adolescent girls in the United States. Relapse rates approach 50% and the standardized mortality ratio is approximately 6. During the pandemic, the rates of child and adolescents admitted to the Yale Children’s Hospital for treatment of severe forms of eating disorders has nearly doubled. The complex needs of these patients has placed great strain on the health care system. This Compassionate Care Rounds provides a case example of a multidisciplinary, coordinated model of medical and psychiatric care for this population of children.
