Fifth annual Yale Psychopharmacology Master Class to be held Oct. 9

The Center for Continuing Medical Education at Yale School of Medicine will sponsor the fifth annual Yale Psychopharmacology Master Class on Oct. 9.

This year's conference will focus on depression. Speakers will give updates on recent clinical data, and provide recommendations about how to treat mood disorders, specifically depression.

The event will be held at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale, 155 Temple St. Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by a welcome and introduction by Gerard Sanacora, MD, PhD, (pictured), course director.

At 8:30 a.m., Madhukar Trivedi, MD, will present a talk entitled, "Depression Treatment Resistant Depression: Definition, Subtypes and Clinical Implications." His talk will be followed by a presentation at 9:15 a.m. by Michael E. Thase, MD, entitled, "Evaluating the Relative Efficacy and Safety of Currently Available Medications for TRD."

Following a break for refreshments, Sanacora will present the program "New Developments in Treating Treatment Resistant Major Depression: Are they Ready for Prime Time?" Breakout sessions and lunch will follow, and at 1:30 p.m. Andrew D. Krystal, MD, will present the talk "Kappa Opioid Antagonism as a Potential Therapy for Anhedonia: The FAST-MAS Trial."

The conference aims to help participants apply evidence based prescribing practices, develop treatment strategies for challenging cases, and gain awareness of new and emerging therapies.

The presentation "Interaction of Alcohol Abuse and Mood Disorders" will be given at 2:00 p.m. by Ismene L. Petrakis, MD. Refreshments will follow, and then a presentation entitled "Nicotine and Mood Disorder Interactions (Smoking and Mood Disorders) will be given at 3:45 p.m. by Stephanie S. O'Malley, PhD.
