Child Study Center Grand Rounds: When it isn't autism: Differences in patient and provider perspective
As the neurodiversity movement has grown over the past 20 years, clinicians and researchers may be questioning how autism spectrum disorder is conceptualized and identified by professionals and non-professionals. The number of self-identified individuals has exploded and working with these individuals can be complicated. Importantly, professionals need to understand the issues surrounding diagnosis and appropriate treatment of ASD and associated comorbidities. Further, learning how to think and talk together about the meaning of the diagnosis to the patient and family will enhance and deepen the treatment.
