Meet Dr. Henry Hsia

 .
  • 00:00I'm Henry Shaw. I'm an associate professor
  • 00:03in the division of Plastic Surgery
  • 00:05and also the founding director of the
  • 00:08Yale Return of Wound Healing Program,
  • 00:10and we treat patients with difficult
  • 00:12wounds for any reason, anywhere in
  • 00:15the body and in any age of patient.
  • 00:18And so for with the SMILE program,
  • 00:20we often see patients who have wounds
  • 00:23because of their cancer or because of the
  • 00:25treatment they needed for their cancer.
  • 00:28I like talking to people.
  • 00:30I like meeting lots of.
  • 00:32Different types of people,
  • 00:33and that's something that I
  • 00:35definitely get in my current work,
  • 00:37and I like to be a problem solver.
  • 00:40That is something that even though
  • 00:42it can be very challenging and the
  • 00:45solutions aren't always straightforward,
  • 00:47I felt that that combination of
  • 00:49science and talking with people with
  • 00:51something that was very appealing.
  • 00:53One of the things that I've noticed
  • 00:55with trying to get challenging wounds
  • 00:58to heal is that people who live
  • 01:01alone or have no real social support.
  • 01:03Can have a real hard time getting
  • 01:06a wound to heal,
  • 01:07so I definitely encourage patients to
  • 01:10bring family members or someone who
  • 01:12can act as a coach or guide to help
  • 01:14reinforce the recommendations that I
  • 01:16make to help get their wounds to heal.
  • 01:20We have a.
  • 01:22Team of Moon nurses, when clinicians,
  • 01:24both on the outpatient side as
  • 01:25well as in the inpatient program,
  • 01:28so when a patient gets admitted
  • 01:30to Smile Hospital and there is
  • 01:32a concern about a wound,
  • 01:33our team will be console Tidd and we will.
  • 01:36The patient will be seen by our
  • 01:38impatient when clinicians and will
  • 01:40make sure that they are connected
  • 01:42with our outpatient wound clinic and
  • 01:44oftentimes the same provider who sees
  • 01:46him on the inpatient will follow up
  • 01:48with them in the outpatient setting and
  • 01:50we found that many patients really.
  • 01:53Appreciate that and have that continuity.
  • 01:54I always do my best to try to help
  • 01:57patients get their wounds to heal.
  • 01:59I can't promise that it'll heal overnight,
  • 02:01but I will work with the patient
  • 02:03and stick with them as long as
  • 02:05they want to stick with me.
