The following highly competitive national and international prizes limited to one submission, nominations are coordinated through the dean’s office. To nominate a YSM faculty member who merits this recognition, contact the dean's office by the internal deadline with the name and a brief summary of accomplishments for consideration of nomination by Dean Brown.

| January 31 | HFSP Nakasone | Annual award for ground-breaking contributions or breakthrough discoveries in the life sciences. The HFSP Nakasone Award recognizes achievements in scientific excellence that have moved the frontiers of knowledge in biology. The award is for a particular discovery or set of discoveries. These shall be: 1. frontier contributions to knowledge in the life sciences 2. have resulted in notable breakthrough that has had significant consequences for scientists throughout the world 3. be identifiable via (a) specific publication(s) No restrictions on who may be nominated, focus is on early career scientists, no self-nominations. | link |
| February 1 | FASEB Excellence in Science Award – Lifetime Achievement – Mid-Career Investigator -Early-Career Investigator | The FASEB Excellence in Science Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement by women in biological science. Recipients are women whose career achievements have contributed significantly to further our understanding of a particular discipline by excellence in research. Nominators and nominees must be a member of at least one FASEB Full Member Society but do not have to be members of the same society; Award based on scientific achievements, impact on trainees and career development, service activities. | link |

| February 28 | L’Oreal-Unesco for Women in Science | These awards are presented every year to five outstanding women scientists - one per each of the following regions: Africa and the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America - in recognition of their scientific accomplishments. The scientific fields considered for the awards alternate every other year between Life Sciences (even years) and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science (odd years). | link |

| March 1 | (NAS) - The James Prize in Science & Technology Integration | Honors outstanding contributions made by researchers who are able to adopt or adapt information or techniques from outside of their fields, and thus integrate knowledge from two or more disciplines (e.g., engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, biomedicine, geosciences, astronomy, or computational sciences) to solve a major contemporary challenge not addressable from a single disciplinary perspective. Self-nominations are not accepted. Joint nominations will only be considered when nominees have collaborated closely — usually in the same laboratory — on the work to be recognized by the award. | March 31 | Bial Award in Biomedicine | The BIAL Award seeks to recognize a work published in the broad biomedical field within the last ten years, the results of which are considered of exceptional quality and scientific relevance. Only works nominated by the voting members of the Jury, the members of the Scientific Board of the BIAL Foundation, previous BIAL award winners or Scientific Societies may be considered candidates for the BIAL Award in Biomedicine. The Jury may also invite other scientific institutions to submit nominations. Self-nominations are not allowed. A maximum of two nominations can be submitted by an organized group of scientists, such as a university, society, academy or research institute. The nominating panel should not include individuals who contributed to the nominated work. Nominations are welcomed for works authored by scientists at any stage of their career. | link |
| May 1 | The Sjöberg Prize | The prize for cancer research is awarded to a scientist or a group of scientists who have made a fundamental discovery that is expected to advance our knowledge about disease mechanisms, prevention or treatment of cancer. | May 15 | Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences | Each year, the FNIH recognizes outstanding achievements by a promising young scientist in biomedical research by bestowing the Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences, a $100,000 award. | link |
| May 31 | Harrington Prize for Innovation in Medicine | Honors noteworthy and distinguished accomplishments in any field of science within the National Academy of Science’s charter. The 2022 award is presented in infectious diseases with a $25,000 prize. | link |
| May 31 | Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize | The Government of Japan established this to combat the spread of infectious diseases. The Prize consists of two categories: Medical Research which honors individuals and Medical Services which honors individuals and organizations. Prize is open to any nationality, age, or gender. Medical Research: Nominations are to be for one individual. In the case of joint research, a maximum of three individuals will be considered. Medical Services: (In the case of nominating an organization, nominations are limited to one currently active organization.) Nominations are in principle to be one individual or one organization per activity. | June 1 | Wolf Prize | The prize is awarded to outstanding artists and scientists for their achievements for the benefit of mankind. Prize is by invitation only. | June 1 | John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award | Nominations may be from any field of research impacting global health and health inequity. The award is intended for research-focused candidates, not those primarily involved in administrative or advocacy roles. This award can be shared by multiple recipients. | link |
| June 1 | Patricia Price Browne Prize in Biomedical Ethics | The Prize recognizes the importance of ethics in confronting the critical biomedical issues of the day. The ideal candidate would have made an outstanding contribution through active service in medical ethics by serving on appropriate committees or commissions, or by improving the profession’s effectiveness in upholding its ethical standards through the advocacy of policies, provision or organization of services. Qualified candidates may be physicians, nurses, research scientists or anyone in the medical or professional ethics fields who demonstrates the highest professional standards in addressing ethical issues relating to healthcare. | link |
| June 1 | (NAS) - The Richard Lounsberry Award | The award is given in alternate years by the National Academy of Sciences and the French Académie des Sciences, to young (no older than 45 by October 5th) French and American scientists to recognize extraordinary scientific achievement in biology and medicine. Joint nominations are discouraged and will only be considered when nominees have collaborated closely — usually in the same laboratory — on the work to be recognized by the award. | June 30 | Alan T. Waterman Award (National Scientific Foundation) | The award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by the National Science Foundation. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be 40 years old or younger, or not more than ten years beyond the receipt of the Ph.D. degree by December 31 of the year in which they are nominated. Candidates should have demonstrated exceptional individual achievements in scientific or engineering research of sufficient quality to place them in front of their peers. Criteria include originality, innovation, and significant impact on the field. | link |

Carty Award for the Advancement of Science is awarded every two years, to recognize noteworthy and distinguished accomplishments in any field of science within the National Academy of Science’s calendar. Joint nominations are discouraged and will only be considered when nominees have collaborated closely — usually in the same laboratory — on the work to be recognized by the award. | July 15 | Dickson Prize | Nominees for the Dickson Prize in Medicine should be actively engaged in innovative, paradigm-shifting biomedical research that is worthy of significant and broad attention. This is a prize for someone whose career has been building, who is at an especially productive point currently, and whose research is- or will be - so influential that it deserves major recognition. | link |

| August 1 | Dan David Prize | The prize recognizes and encourages innovative and interdisciplinary research that cuts across traditional boundaries and paradigms. The prize covers three dimensions, past, present and future that represent realms of human achievement. | link |
| August 1 | Mechthild Esser Nemmers Prize in Medical Science | This prize is awarded biennially. Candidacy is open to physician-scientists whose body of research exhibits outstanding achievement in their disciplines as demonstrated by works of lasting significance. Individuals of all nationalities and institutional affiliations were eligible except current or recent members of the Northwestern University faculty and recipients of the Nobel Prize. | link |

| August 15 | Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science | Nominees must be women scientists in any area of basic or clinical research or clinical practice. The nominee must have a national reputation, a stellar record of research accomplishments, and must be an active mentor of other women in science. | August 15 | The Ross Prize in Molecular Medicine | The annual Ross Prize in Molecular Medicine is established in conjunction with the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and Molecular Medicine. The winner will be an active investigator having produced innovative, paradigm-shifting research that is worthy of significant and broad attention in the field of molecular medicine. The right to submit nominations is enjoyed by contributing Editors, Corresponding authors of published articles and peer reviewers of Molecular Medicine. | December 1 | Marion Spencer Fay Award | The Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership of Drexel University College of Medicine invites you to nominate a woman physician or scientist who has made an exceptionally significant contribution to health care as a practitioner, medical educator, administrator, or research scientist. This award is intended to recognize past contributions and support the ongoing work of an outstanding woman physician or scientist.
