Senior Director for Communications Strategy, Product Innovation, and Engineering
Biography
Justin leads communications strategy, product innovation, engineering, and digital marketing at Yale School of Medicine, directing the platform, marketing capability, operational budget, and cross-functional strategy that power the school's academic and clinical digital presence. What distinguishes his portfolio among peer institutions in academic medicine is the depth of capability the office manages in-house: an embedded product and engineering team, a content platform purpose-built to the school's scale and complexity, and an AI engineering capability built to extend the office's reach, output, and speed without growing headcount.
Since joining the Office of Communications as a founding member of its web group in 2006, Justin has shaped the school's long-term digital strategy across two decades of institutional change. He spearheaded the school's first standardized web templates, led the purchase and implementation of its first enterprise CMS (SDL Tridion), and oversaw the creation of Beatrix — a proprietary platform supporting web content, more than 35,000 faculty and staff profiles, 100,000 calendar events, and 75,000 news articles across medicine.yale.edu and more than 440 related sites. He has also led the introduction of standardized digital signage across the school's campus.
Justin has championed AI integration in communications since 2018, applying predictive models, natural language processing, and generative AI to product development, content automation, and workflow design. His current focus is an AI-first ground-up rebuild of Beatrix — compressed to under six months through AI-assisted development — paired with a unified web strategy that will consolidate more than 460 sites into a single, entity-driven experience at medicine.yale.edu, targeting completion in mid-2027.
His cross-functional leadership brings together teams spanning product, engineering, web services, digital marketing, marketing analytics, and strategy, aligning their work with the school's research, education, and patient care missions.
Outside of work, Justin draws on an expansive life to bring fresh perspectives to the field. He speaks at conferences on AI in communications and on building and evaluating new technology to enhance software and communications strategy. He works with his hands — gardening, renovating, and building — finding that physical work creates the mental space to approach problems differently. An avid reader of fiction and nonfiction, he studies history and politics to understand how people have communicated, built trust, and shaped public understanding across time, informing how he thinks about advancing the reputation of YSM's scientific and medical work today. He travels to experience other cultures and pays close attention to emerging technology, particularly how it will reshape the ways audiences discover and connect with consequential work. He lives in Seattle with his partners Rudy and Randy, and their child Felix.
