Record-breaking Number of Admitted Students Attend Second Look

April 01, 2023

Over 160 admitted MD and MD-PhD students visited the Yale campus in late March for an exciting line-up of Second Look activities — a record number for the annual event. The MD-PhD students arrived a day early for joint degree focused events, and joined the broader group on March 23-25.

There was a wide range of activities to give the admittees a better sense of Yale School of Medicine (YSM), including panel discussions on student research, START@Yale, global health, and financial aid. During the flex blocks, visitors could take interactive tours of the anatomy lab and Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation, get a lesson in how to tie surgical knots and use the point-of-care ultrasound machine, and take small group tours of the YSM campus with current students.

Admitted students had several opportunities to engage with faculty, including joining “faculty speed meetings,” having lunch with Dean Nancy J. Brown, MD, and hearing Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Assistant Professor of Neuroscience Yemisi Damisah, MD, deliver the Faculty Change Maker Lecture and Sterling Professor of Cell Biology and Professor of Chemistry James Rothman, PhD, deliver the Nobel Lecture.

Other highlights included breakfast with leaders from several New Haven community groups and Yale organizations focused on the community, such as Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, Fair Haven Community Health Care, HAVEN Free Clinic, Yale Center for Asylum Medicine, and the Anatomy Teaching Program with Hill Regional Career High School. Admitted students also engaged with DICE affinity groups over lunch and could join the DICE breakfast at the home of Associate Dean for Medical Student Diversity and Professor of Pediatrics (General Pediatrics) Marietta Vazquez, MD, FAAP.

There was plenty of time for socializing at meals and evening receptions with current students and faculty. Handsome Dan XIX even joined the gathering to welcome the prospective students to Yale!

“We could not have had such an enormously successful event without the hard work and dedication of our admissions ambassadors, Kavita Israni-Winger, Waleed Khan, Devesh Malik, Rhys Richmond, and Josiah Sherman. I am deeply grateful for their assistance,” states Acting Director of Admissions Barbara Watts.
