Meet Lonnette Diggs, Research Associate II, Nephrology

October 15, 2024

What is your role in the Department of Internal Medicine?

I am a research associate in the Section of Nephrology, where I manage the Animal Physiology and Phenotyping Core, previously known as the O’Brien Kidney Center Renal Physiology Core. My role involves overseeing laboratory compliance and operations, as well as conducting assays and specialized services to evaluate renal function in small animal models.

Why did you decide to work at Yale School of Medicine?

As a native of New Haven with a passion for science, it was only natural for me to work at Yale School of Medicine.

Have you been involved in any projects you are particularly proud of?

In my 15-plus years managing the Physiology Core, I have generated data for tens of thousands of samples for researchers within the Yale community and external academic institutions. This data has supported numerous projects, all of which I take great pride in.

What is the most rewarding part of your career?

The most rewarding part of my career is the relationships I have developed over the years as a member of the Yale School of Medicine community.

What do you enjoy about working at Yale?

I enjoy the affinity groups and resources Yale provides to help employees maintain work-life balance.

What is a fun fact about you?

A fun fact about me is that I have had three stints at Yale School of Medicine. The first was during high school when I was chosen for a summer research internship at Yale University for students from New Haven Public Schools. Working in Dr. Peter Aronson's lab in the Section of Nephrology, under the supervision of Thecla Abbiati, introduced me to the world of academic research.

The second was working as a weekend casual employee in the Yale Animal Resources Center while attending Southern Connecticut State University.

Fast forward many years, and I had a full circle moment, returning to work in the Section of Nephrology, this time as the lab manager in the laboratory of Dr. Pat Preisig and former School of Medicine Dean Robert Alpern. My third stint evolved into managing the research core under Dr. Preisig.

When I came back to work in Nephrology, Thecla informed me that she still had my lab notebook from my summer internship. Of course, I now have that notebook with me in my lab.

Tell us one piece of advice you will never forget.

Always leave your mark.
