1 Minute Read

James E. Kempton, MD, has been appointed chief of surgical services for the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, effective immediately. Kempton has served in the acting role since March 1, 2025, providing steady leadership during a period of significant transition following the retirement of key support staff. His permanent appointment follows a national search led by the VA in collaboration with the Department of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine (YSM).

Kempton is an associate professor of ophthalmology at YSM and serves as vice chair for veterans affairs in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. A nationally recognized expert in vitreoretinal diseases and retina surgery, he also directs Eye Care Services at the West Haven VA, where he has played a pivotal role in advancing comprehensive ophthalmologic care.
