Faculty Teaching Resources
Teaching and education are central elements of the Yale School of Medicine’s mission. There is a broad scope of target audiences, including students in our MD, MD-PhD, and PA programs, as well as residents, fellows, and fellow faculty.
There is a range of fulfilling opportunities for YSM faculty to engage with varying learners, as well as resources to help make faculty become better educators in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings.Optimizing your Teaching
The Center for Medical Education fosters and supports excellence in medical education at YSM. The Center faculty and staff are available to provide expertise and innovation in educator development, assessment, learning technologies, and curriculum design, as well as medical education research and scholarship. They oversee a number of programs, offer educator development sessions, and are available for individual consultation. Of note, the Center also leads the Committee to Review Student Participation in research, which reviews research protocols that enroll Yale medical school students prior to submission to the IRB. Specific programs that faculty may want to explore include:
- Medical Education Day at Yale
- Medical Education Discussion Group series
- Yale Medical Educator Series - YES!
- Education Scholar Fellowship
- Master of Health Science-Medical Education Track degree program
Yale Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning offers support for faculty with online, blended, and in-person education.
Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation’s mission is to provide excellent patient care through innovative medical education, assessment, research, systems integration and outreach. The state-of-the-art center strives to provide members of Yale New Haven Health System and Yale School of Medicine communities with an ideal learning environment that fosters self-reflection, mutual respect and an integrated, interdisciplinary team spirit in order to optimize healthcare delivery and engender a culture committed to patient safety.
Teaching Evaluations
The evaluations that our trainees complete can provide invaluable feedback that faculty should use to guide their development. Just as feedback to trainees is used to help them, feedback to faculty should be used in a similar fashion. Evaluations should be reviewed on a periodic basis and attention paid to suggested areas for improvement.
Medhub is the platform used for teaching evaluations from the clinical setting. Under the index page, select “Evaluations” along the top bar and then “Aggregate Evaluations” under the sub bar. Aggregated scoring and comments can be reviewed there. If you do no not have access to that option, please contact your department registrar.
Teaching House Staff & Graduates
Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office supports the the residents and fellows of Yale New Haven Hospital and offers much information about related programs.
Yale Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) offers graduate training.
Office for Postdoctoral Affairs works with departments to appoint, support, and train our postdoctoral community.
Teaching Students
Educating MD, MD-PhD, PA, and PA Online students provides a wonderful opportunity for YSM faculty to contribute to YSM's education mission and both help shape and learn from the next generation of physicians, scientists, and PAs.
Below are some examples of how you can engage with teaching and mentoring. The Office of Medical Education at Yale has delineated additional teaching and mentoring opportunities for faculty with MD, MD-PHD, PA, and PA Online students.
- MD Office of Admissions offers faculty the opportunity to serve on the Admissions Committee and engage prospective students.
- MD Office of Curriculum offers faculty the opportunity to participate with preclinical courses, clerkships, electives, and subinternships. Faculty also are needed for the Interprofessional Longitudinal Clinical Experience (ILCE), Medical Clinical Experience (MCE), Longitudinal Coaching Program, teaching clinical skills, and office precepting.
- Office of Global Health Education focuses on student education while engaging faculty in teaching around global health themes, serving as global health research mentors, and fostering a community of clinician educators engaged in global health.
- MD Office of Student Affairs offers faculty the opportunity to be heads of advisory houses and advisory house affiliates, serve on the progress committee, and precept student interest groups.
- Diversity, Inclusion, Community Engagement, and Equity (DICE) has programs with opportunities for faculty involvement, mentoring, and more.
- MD Office of Student Research plays a critical role in mentoring students with research and thesis work. They regularly seek mentors for the START@Yale Program (Summer To Advance Research Training @ Yale), which pairs medical students with faculty research mentors during the summer before the first year. As students get established at YSM, further formulate their interests, and start to think about next steps, there are many further opportunities for mentoring YSM students.
- YSM Physician Associate Program offers faculty the opportunity to participate in the pre-clinical curriculum (deliver lectures, facilitate small group workshops and simulated participant sessions), and to serve as Interprofessional Longitudinal Clinical Experience (ILCE) faculty coaches. Faculty also can serve as thesis advisors and engage in clinical teaching during clerkships
- YSM Physician Assistant Online Program offers faculty the opportunity to take part in several online learning experiences including instruction during clinical year callback days, which includes PANCE review lectures and small group facilitation of delivering serious news and shared decision making.
Faculty as Learners
Continuing Medical Education
Yale Continuing Medical Education (CME) helps develop and implement creative, ethical, and evidence-based educational opportunities that are designed to increase physician competence, enhance practice performance, promote patient safety, and, where applicable, improve patient outcomes in the populations served by the health care providers we educate.
Master of Health Sciences Degree Program
Master of Health Science (MHS) is a two-year Yale degree for applicants with YSM resident, fellow, or faculty appointments, and anyone with a terminal professional in medical care or biomedical sciences degree from across the Yale community and outside partners. Major requirements for the MHS degree include successful completion of a tailored curriculum (30+ credits), Research in Progress seminars, and mentored research resulting in an original thesis/research publication.
The program offers four tracks from which applicants may choose:
- Advanced Health Sciences Research
- Clinical Informatics & Data Science
- Clinical Investigation
- Medical Education
Each track is designed to provide exposure to diverse research areas, more robust training, and formalized cohort building and peer-to-peer mentoring.
