Biography

Ryan Sutherland is a fifth-year medical student at the Yale School of Medicine. He earned a BS and BA in Biology and Music Performance with honors from Emory University. He also earned an MPH from Yale University and an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge as a Rotary Global Grant Scholar. In addition to completing his medical studies, he is currently completing the Master in Nonprofit Leadership program at University of Pennsylvania, previously obtaining a certificate in Social Impact Strategy (SIS) at UPenn's Center for Social Impact Strategy. He is drawn to projects at the intersection of clinical medicine, public health, and global development, and actively conducts research on homelessness, substance use, maternal and child health, palliative care, and in Urology.

Ryan is deeply passionate about global health and equity, serving as a board member of the Yale Alumni Service Corps, where he has collaborated with women entrepreneurs in Brazil to advance sustainable economic opportunities. He has also worked as a primary care provider with Medicine in Action, delivering medical care to under-resourced communities in rural Jamaica; and with Amazon Promise, providing healthcare to indigenous populations in the Upper Amazon basin in Peru.

He serves as the Executive Director of the New Haven PAUSE Project and Community Outreach Director of the Neighborhood Health Project, two local community clinics that focus on caring for New Haven's homeless, undocumented, and uninsured populations, and has been a recipient of the Yale Alumni Association Public Service Award and a Seton Elm-Ivy Award for his commitment to helping communities in need. At YSM, he has led the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) chapter and the Urology Interest Group, served as a member of the Student Advisory Board at the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking (Tsai CITY), and is a Solomon Fellow at the Yale Law School.

As a scholar-activist, he is interested in leveraging his passion for social entrepreneurship, community mobilization, and human-centered design to revolutionize healthcare delivery models and build more resilient communities.
