Biography

Dr. Styron earned his BA (English) and MA (Political Science) from Columbia University and his MS and PhD (Clinical Psychology, 1997) from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. From 1982 to 1990, he held a variety of leadership positions with the New York Coalition for the Homeless, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the Association to Benefit Children, which he co-founded. Dr. Styron completed his postgraduate training at Yale University, based at the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) and Yale's Student Counseling Service. He served as Executive Director of the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation in 1998 and then joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry in 1999. In addition to senior leadership roles at CMHC, Dr. Styron is Executive Director of the Community Services Network of Greater New Haven, a collaborative of 15 community-based not-for-profit organizations which provide a broad array of integrated recovery supports for individuals with serious mental illnesses and for which CMHC is lead agency. Dr. Styron is also Director of Psychology Training for CMHC's Adult Community Mental Health division, a Fellow at Pauli Murray College, a Yale College Student Faculty Advisor and serves on the Admissions Committee for the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Styron’s research and teaching focuses on best practices in the area of recovery-oriented care for individuals with serious mental illnesses. Dr. Styron maintains a limited private practice in the East Rock neighborhood serving the Yale community.
