Biography
Mitchell Elliott, MD, FRCPC, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology) and a clinician-scientist in the Center for Breast Cancer at Yale Cancer Center, and a member of the Genomics, Genetics and Epigenetics research program. Dr. Elliott is a medical oncologist who cares for patients with breast cancer.
He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology at the University of Toronto and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, followed by fellowship training in Phase I drug development through the Princess Margaret Drug Development Program. He concurrently completed his research training in the laboratory of Dr. David Cescon, where his work combined functional models of acquired drug resistance with the clinical validation and development of novel circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) assays. He is a recipient of the Margaret Foti Foundation Scholar-in-Training Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, the Novartis Oncology Young Canadian Investigator Award, and the Conquer Cancer Syndax Endowed Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Elliott's clinical and scientific work centers on acquired resistance to breast cancer therapies and the use of blood-based assays to detect it. His laboratory addresses three questions:
- Why do breast cancer therapies stop working?
- How can the patients developing resistance, and the biology driving it, be identified from a blood test?
- How can new drugs and drug combinations be developed to overcome or prevent that resistance?
