Biography

Michael Ghio, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery, Trauma, and Surgical Critical Care at the Yale School of Medicine. He is a trauma and acute care surgeon and surgical intensivist with clinical interests in the care of critically ill and injured patients, emergency general surgery, and resuscitation.

Dr. Ghio completed his General Surgery Residency at Tulane University School of Medicine, followed by a two-year AAST fellowship in Trauma, Emergency Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania. His academic interests include trauma resuscitation, critical care, organ donation and donor management, and clinical outcomes research. His research has focused on novel approaches to resuscitation, traumatic cardiac arrest, endothelial and glycocalyx dysfunction in both trauma and following brain death, and strategies to improve the care of organ donors and transplantation outcomes. He has also studied innovative models of critical care delivery, including the use of telecritical care in donor management.

Dr. Ghio is actively involved in national surgical organizations, including the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, & the American College of Surgeons serving in leadership positions within those. His academic work is centered on translating physiologic and clinical research into practical strategies to improve outcomes for critically ill and injured patients.
