Jose Luis Paredes Sosa

Originally from Peru, my interest in infectious diseases started while working at the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. My research in Peru was focused on HIV treatment knowledge and psychosocial burden among people living with HIV, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis and HIV care, and antimicrobial use and resistance in urban, peri-urban, and rural settings. I also led a clinical trial evaluating lactoferrin as a preventive therapy for COVID-19. While completing a master’s degree in Control of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, I worked as an outreach worker in HIV/STI prevention. After graduating, I stayed in the UK working as a research assistant on clinical studies focused on HIV treatment and prevention (University College London) and on HIV PrEP implementation in Africa (Imperial College London). This work later led me to the Health Research Unit Zimbabwe, where I worked on a clinical trial evaluating vitamin D supplementation among adolescents and young adults living with HIV in Zimbabwe and Zambia. I subsequently pursued residency training in Internal Medicine at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. I am interested in pursuing a career in the intersection of Infectious Diseases (with a focus on HIV) and Global Health.
