John McDougall, MD

Dr. John McDougall began his medical training at the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM), completing his first year of coursework at Montana State University in Bozeman. Prompted by an interest in rural health issues, he took full advantage of the UWSOM’s 5-state WWAMI education system, including an immersion-style, multi-month rural medical training block in a remote corner of Washington State adjacent to the Colville Indian Reservation. Additional training sites included Cut Bank, Montana, which borders the Blackfoot Reservation, as well as sites in Wenatchee and Spokane, Washington. Dr. McDougall went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine through the Primary Care track at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he continued to focus on issues facing rural medical care. During residency he also pursued a growing interest in rheumatology, one that derived in part from his experiences working with rural populations and Native Americans. Following a 6-week externship in rheumatology and general medicine at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska Dr. McDougall went on rheumatology fellowship at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, completing his fellowship in June of 2016. Seeking further training in health services research, he is currently enrolled in the inaugural class of the National Clinician Scholars Program, where he plans to focus on the use of telehealth technologies in the delivery of rheumatology subspecialty care.
