Overview

Gary Zimmerman, MD, is a neurosurgeon who specializes in cerebrovascular neurosurgery, tumor surgery, and the treatment of complex spinal disorders. He cares for patients with conditions that affect the blood vessels of the brain, including aneurysms and other abnormalities that can lead to bleeding or stroke. He also performs surgery to remove brain and spinal tumors and treats painful spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis using minimally invasive procedures such as kyphoplasty.

Dr. Zimmerman’s practice includes both traditional and advanced surgical techniques. Trained in robotic surgery, he uses a specialized imaging system that provides real-time, three-dimensional views of the spine during surgery. This technology helps him plan and perform complex spinal operations with greater precision and control. He works closely with each patient to choose the safest and most effective treatment approach based on their condition, overall health, and personal goals.

As an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Zimmerman is involved in teaching the next generation of neurosurgeons. His academic work focuses on applying advanced surgical and imaging techniques to improve the safety of cerebrovascular and spine surgery.

Dr. Zimmerman earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical School. He completed his internship and residency in neurosurgery at Cornell University's New York Hospital. He then pursued advanced training with a fellowship in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery at the Mayfield Institute at the University of Cincinnati.
