Psychiatry Resident
Biography
Dr. Danyaal Khan, also known as Dr. Danny Khan, was born in Orange, California and raised in a close-knit family alongside his mother, twin brother, and older sister. His journey into psychiatry has been shaped by a combination of advocacy, military service, and a longstanding commitment to serving underserved communities.
At the age of 18, Dr. Khan enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning his career in medicine as a Hospital Corpsman. During his military service, he completed specialized training as a Behavioral Health Technician (NEC HM-8485) and Field Medical Technician (NEC HM-8404). While stationed at Naval Hospital Bremerton, he served as a psychiatric corpsman, taking on advanced clinical responsibilities that included facilitating group therapy, providing cognitive behavioral therapy interventions, and conducting psychiatric intake assessments. These formative experiences fostered his passion for psychiatry and deepened his commitment to improving access to high-quality mental health care, particularly for military personnel and veterans.
Following five years of active-duty service, Dr. Khan pursued higher education, earning bachelor's degrees in Biology, Psychology, and Health Services Technology from Thomas Edison State University. He completed additional medical pre-requisites at San Francisco State University. He subsequently attended Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2025.
Throughout his medical training, Dr. Khan remained dedicated to advocacy, mentorship, and service. Drawing upon his experiences as a military veteran and member of historically underrepresented communities, he served as chapter president of the Latino Medical Student Association, participated in veteran counseling initiatives, and promoted inclusivity through his involvement with Allies in Medicine. His academic interests include trauma-related psychiatric disorders, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and he has contributed to research exploring alternative pharmacologic treatments, including doxazosin for PTSD-associated nightmares.
As a psychiatry resident at Yale, Dr. Khan continues to pursue his interests in leadership, community engagement, and medical education through his involvement in the Leadership Track. He been involved in social committee, and recruitment orientation committee. His long-term professional aspirations center on improving psychiatric care for veterans, marginalized populations, and communities facing barriers to mental health services.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Khan enjoys cooking, baking, playing video games, spending time with friends, and hosting social gatherings. He values building meaningful connections with others and is always excited to meet someone new!
