Biography

Bernard (Bernie) Cook is a PhD-trained scientist serving as the Grants & Scientific Manager for the Yale Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. In this role, his focus is to increase research funding for the Department by supporting faculty with their research proposals. His support can be broadly grouped into four categories: proposal development, proposal review & editing, funding strategy, and scientific illustration.

Bernie grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University where he supported a project investigating the role of brain size in subdural hematoma risk following motor vehicle crashes or falls under the supervision of Yun Seok Kang, PhD, and Ann Mallory, PhD. Following his time as a Buckeye, Bernie headed north to Minnesota, where he earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota under the supervision of Patrick Alford, PhD. There, he studied how vascular smooth muscle cells and epithelial cells remodel after being stretched.

Following graduate school, Bernie began his postgraduate career at the University of Connecticut Health Center as an Assistant Professor in Residence. In that position, he supported faculty, staff, and trainees across 20 departments in the School of Medicine as a scientific editor, research developer, and biomedical illustrator. Notably, his support helped secure over $20M in NIH funding.

In his free time, Dr. Cook is an avid boulderer and pizza maker, and enjoys hiking, backpacking, and working on bikes.
