Yale Physician-Scientist Development Awards

The Office of Physician-Scientist and Scientist Development was established to provide infrastructure aimed at supporting and developing scientists as they navigate challenges at different stages in their careers. One of our major initiatives is the development the Yale Physician-Scientist Development Awards program (YPSDA), which will provide grants to junior physician-scientists (MD or MD/PhD) to conduct mentored research that will facilitate development of independent research programs. Individuals who are strongly committed to research careers focused on improving human health are encouraged to apply. This includes research across the full span (T0-T4) of basic, clinical, translational, and community-based research focused on human health.

  • These awards will cover up to 75% of an individual’s salary (up to $120,000) and provide $25,000 of research support per year for two years.
  • Applicants who have an active career development award are not eligible for salary support but may apply for up to $25,000 in research support per year.
  • A minimum of 75% dedicated time for mentored research and training is required (a minimum of 50% for those in a surgical field).
  • Applicants must have a full-time Yale faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, Instructor, Associate Research Scientist, or Research Scientist at the time of the award.
  • The applicant must have been a faculty member for fewer than five years by the earliest anticipated start date, Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
  • YPSDA awards are included within the YCCI Scholars Program and share a common application (i.e. applicants will be considered for both programs). YPSDA slots will be awarded to eligible candidates after review. The RFA and the application can be accessed here.
