Biography

Kamal Gautam is a PhD candidate at the University of Connecticut and Lab Manager at Shrestha Lab, where he leads and supports NIH-funded projects across the United States, Malaysia, and Nepal. He was born and raised in Nepal and brings a firsthand understanding of the health challenges faced by marginalized communities in resource-limited settings. He also brings both cross-continental and cross-sectoral perspectives, having lived, studied, and worked in Nepal, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and the United States, and worked across academia, research, policy advocacy, and nonprofit sectors.


With over a decade of professional experience, Kamal is committed to addressing health disparities among underserved and marginalized populations. His research focuses on HIV, suicide prevention, tobacco cessation, and substance use, with a particular emphasis on digital health interventions. Recently, his work has centered on using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and real-time just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAI) to prevent suicide and reduce tobacco and substance use.
