  • 00:00Yale Pediatrics has.
  • 00:04Combined cutting edge science
  • 00:08technology, clinical care,
  • 00:11education and research and blended
  • 00:13it with a sense of collaboration,
  • 00:17collegiality and a feeling
  • 00:19that we're part of a family.
  • 00:25In every decade of this century of time,
  • 00:28we can see clear progress on
  • 00:31Children's Health, right,
  • 00:32whether it started with hand
  • 00:34washing to vaccinations and
  • 00:36now to genomic medicine.
  • 00:38You have really high and eared
  • 00:39research in how to care for children.
  • 00:42Better the first neonatal intensive care
  • 00:44unit developed in the world was here at Yale.
  • 00:46New Haven Children's Hospital
  • 00:48developing the insulin pump for a sweat
  • 00:51test was developed here at Yale for
  • 00:53early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.
  • 00:55And we have just recently installed
  • 00:58the first neonatal brain MRI machine
  • 01:00in an academic center in the country.
  • 01:03I don't know what to predict for
  • 01:04the next century, but I think it'll
  • 01:06be very exciting and it's fun to be
  • 01:08a part of that kind of discovery.
  • 01:10To find that we are celebrating our
  • 01:13hundredth year in the midst of this pandemic.
  • 01:17Really teaches how something that we
  • 01:19have to have an extraordinary next 100
  • 01:22years and that's what we are starting
  • 01:25to see and that we are well suited
  • 01:28because you're Pediatrics. Has done this.
  • 01:35I came to Yale to do my training.
  • 01:36I found that Yale had this perfect setup
  • 01:40of really amazing clinicians, phenomenal
  • 01:44research being done, but in a size
  • 01:46that allowed for a feel of family.
  • 01:48I think each one of us in the Department
  • 01:51of Pediatrics does what we do best.
  • 01:54We do what we're passionate about,
  • 01:56and when you seek your passions, then you
  • 01:58really excel and and you
  • 02:00come up with that innovation.
  • 02:04I'm here 52 years,
  • 02:05but what I think is unique about
  • 02:08it is its position within a very
  • 02:11interactive university environment.
  • 02:13So it's Yale University,
  • 02:15Yale Medical School,
  • 02:16Yale New Haven hospital.
  • 02:18Many of us are both taking care
  • 02:20of patients as well as studying
  • 02:23what causes disease in children,
  • 02:25and that relationship really makes
  • 02:27us unique. We work together ARM and
  • 02:30ARM with our nursing colleagues,
  • 02:32our therapists, our pharmacists.
  • 02:34To bring it to the bedside in
  • 02:37our hospital and in our clinics.
  • 02:43The thing that is so incredibly
  • 02:45special about this place is just
  • 02:47the marriage between this history of
  • 02:49sort of academic success and being
  • 02:51at the forefront of all kinds of
  • 02:54pediatric research and clinical care.
  • 02:56Really mixed with this feeling
  • 02:57of community and family and
  • 02:58being connected to New Haven and
  • 03:00being connected to one another.
  • 03:01We have community physicians who,
  • 03:04unlike anywhere else in the country,
  • 03:05round on their patients and care for their
  • 03:08inpatients and faculty and community
  • 03:10are in the primary care centers are.
  • 03:13Traveling out to deliver care
  • 03:15in unique and innovative ways.
  • 03:17I love the fact that we have a true
  • 03:20commitment to being the pediatricians
  • 03:23in the state of Connecticut that we
  • 03:26have a Community commitment not only
  • 03:29to patient care but also for advocacy.
  • 03:32Policy and then in our research.
  • 03:37You can't really provide great
  • 03:39clinical service if you don't
  • 03:41really know your patients.
  • 03:43The care of the patient is not just writing
  • 03:45a prescription or giving a vaccine.
  • 03:48You need to understand the
  • 03:50social determinants of health.
  • 03:52We all have a responsibility
  • 03:54to be as inclusive as we
  • 03:57possibly can to everyone.
  • 03:59All members of our community,
  • 04:02all members of our department,
  • 04:04and all of us who come from
  • 04:07different walks of life.
  • 04:08With different backgrounds,
  • 04:10we actively work to promote the careers
  • 04:14of women and underrepresented medicine
  • 04:16minorities because we need their voice.
  • 04:19I'm really proud of our residency program,
  • 04:22who this past year was majority
  • 04:25minority and we that was really due to
  • 04:28intentional efforts and outreach to bring
  • 04:30in a diverse class and to support it.
  • 04:35The role of the pediatrician is evolving.
  • 04:38Now you can be a pediatrician and you
  • 04:40can be cutting edge and innovative by
  • 04:42working on policy by working on advocacy
  • 04:45by being involved in the community.
  • 04:47I have never known a place where you
  • 04:49can sort of show up to work and be
  • 04:51really your authentic self while still
  • 04:53really having a strong commitment to
  • 04:55furthering the field of Pediatrics
  • 04:56and any number of specialties.
  • 04:58I just love that sort of mix of joyfulness
  • 05:01and curiosity with the academic rigor,
  • 05:03and I think that's something
  • 05:04that's pretty special to LP.
  • 05:08We are excited this opportunity of
  • 05:12really defining child care for the next
  • 05:15100 years and we are more than able
  • 05:18because of our history of resilience.
  • 05:21Because of our history of innovation
  • 05:23and asking relevant questions.
