Meet Dr. Dan Boffa

January 26, 2022
  • 00:00Hello, my name is Dan Boffa.
  • 00:03I'm a thoracic surgeon and I am the
  • 00:05chief of thoracic surgery at Yale,
  • 00:08New Haven Hospital.
  • 00:09I specialize in cancer of the
  • 00:11esophagus and of the lung.
  • 00:13I really try to break things
  • 00:15down in a way that is very
  • 00:17simple and understandable to me,
  • 00:19which my patients generally appreciate
  • 00:22because you're overwhelmed with
  • 00:24so much information and things
  • 00:26that are not familiar to you.
  • 00:28I will be honest and I'm going to
  • 00:31give you the straight answers because
  • 00:33I think we together have to come
  • 00:36up with some some big decisions
  • 00:38that are important and I think you
  • 00:41need to know what we're up against.
  • 00:44We have a a broad research focus
  • 00:46in our group.
  • 00:47We concentrate on trying to identify
  • 00:50the best treatments for cancers
  • 00:52of the lung and the esophagus.
  • 00:54We also try to identify patterns of
  • 00:56care that lead to the most appropriate.
  • 00:59Environments taking care of
  • 01:01the more complicated cases,
  • 01:03and we also do research to make sure
  • 01:05that care is distributed fairly across
  • 01:08all people in the United States,
  • 01:10people have often ask me how
  • 01:13we get the results that we do,
  • 01:15and I've often considered myself an
  • 01:17average surgeon who gets excellent results,
  • 01:20and I'd much rather be that
  • 01:22than the other way around,
  • 01:24and the way that we do that is
  • 01:27with a great team, my team.
  • 01:30Spends a tremendous amount of
  • 01:31time and effort and energy in
  • 01:33building expertise so that they
  • 01:35can take care of patients.
  • 01:37And this is not a one person show.
  • 01:40We do it together and every day
  • 01:42our goal is to get better so
  • 01:45that tomorrow we take better care
  • 01:47of patients than we did today.
