Biography
Dr. Dena Schulman-Green is an internationally recognized expert in qualitative and mixed methods research. She founded Yale University's Qualitative Research Group in 2002, which she chaired for over a decade, and later directed the Qualitative and Mixed Methods Core of Yale’s Biobehavioral and Translational Research Laboratory, providing methodological consultation, grant review, and mentorship to investigators across disciplines within and outside of Yale. She provides national leadership in qualitative and mixed methods research with her expertise sought by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and JAMA Internal Medicine, for which she serves as a Distinguished Reviewer.
Dr. Schulman-Green leads development of the Middle Range Theory of Self- and Family Management of Chronic Illness, which describes how patients, family caregivers, and health care professionals co-manage chronic illness. She developed the Managing Cancer Care psychoeducational interventions to improve patient and family caregiver knowledge of curative, palliative, and hospice care and to optimize collaborative management of breast cancer. Her broader research program advances the integration of palliative care into self- and family management among patients with cancer and other serious, life-limiting health conditions, with funding from the NIH, American Cancer Society, PCORI, and the National Palliative Care Research Center among others.
Her honors include designation among the World's Top 2% of Scientists by Stanford University/Elsevier, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization Research Award, the Annie W. Goodrich Award for Excellence in Teaching from Yale School of Nursing, and the Dean's Excellence in Mentoring Award from NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. Dr. Schulman-Green serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and on the editorial board of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.
Dr. Schulman-Green spent 18 years on the faculty of Yale School of Nursing before joining NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing as a tenured Associate Professor, serving as Director of its PhD Program in Nursing Research and Theory Development until 2026.
