Why Train at Yale?
Individualized Education Plan
“There is no typical Yale resident and that is my favorite thing about the program. I have a PhD in astrophysics and was a national swing dance competitor prior to residency. My closest friend in the program came here straight out of medical school. We both found our place here. I particularly like that Yale gives me freedom to make tons of elective choices and to structure my own 4th year. At 35 years old I am extremely grateful for that kind of autonomy.”

A Faculty of Leading Clinicians, Scholars, and Researchers
“I love the fact that at Yale we have amazing supervision and faculty-we get taught by the authors of the papers we read-and yet the atmosphere is relaxed and intellectually stimulating.”

Vibrant Campus in a Lively City
“The Yale community is amazing with so many cultural and intellectual events going on in. Nowhere else will give you free lectures by Hilary Clinton and Tony Blair, free concerts performed by the Cliburn Piano competitors, $10 tickets to Emanuel Ax’s concert and cheap plays performed by the drama school that Jody Foster graduated from. The dating scene is amazing with eligible, talented, well educated people in all age groups.”

"New Haven has the best of both worlds. It’s large enough to have a ton of great restaurants, museums, theaters, art galleries, cafes. Yet it’s small enough to run into friends routinely when I walk in to town, to know the owners of local shops by name, to have so many communities (dedicated to cycling, cooking, kayaking, dancing, etc.) small enough that a sense of trust develops between the people in them. Best of all you can own a spacious home on a resident salary, as many of us do. A great place to call home.”

Dynamic Curriculum
Strong Research Training Program
“I came to Yale for the neurosciences research training program and my interest in learning to take care of patients. Hands down, I thought this was the best place to do both. But truly, I was much less concerned about my career than how our seven year old son would do in New Haven, far away from friends and Chicago, his home. The other night at dinner Noah said, “Mama, the people you work with are so nice.” That’s because my fellow residents have taught Noah to ice skate, introduced him to Star Trek and the art of roasting coffee beans. They have taken him to plays and patiently sat through his own productions. On occasion, residents have exchanged kempo moves, discussed the magic of Tintin, and spent a whole day making Noah and his family the most memorable Chinese meal they have ever had. Thanks, in part, to Yale psychiatry residents, my son now thinks he’s from Connecticut.”

Psychotherapy Training Program
“One of the things I love about being a psychiatric resident at Yale is the one on one interaction with the numerous excellent attendings. While we are given the freedom and independence to care for patients, we also know we can talk with more experienced providers at any time. The teaching is excellent and people take the time to discuss not only psychopharmacology, but also psychotherapy and learning how to care for the whole patient.”

A Commitment to Diversity
"One of the reasons I enjoy our program is the diversity of our residents. No matter what your interests, you can always find someone who is interested in something you are, whether that means international and global psychiatry, healthcare reform, women’s mental health, wine and cheese, farmer’s markets, yoga and meditation, creative writing or website design. The variety of backgrounds and life experiences that other residents bring to the program really contribute to a fantastic learning environment- both inside and outside the hospital.

Varied Training Sites
“What I like about Yale is that I get an extraordinary clinical experience but at the same time I have the opportunity to pursue research. Yale Psychiatry has one of the highest NIH total awards in the country and we have a large faculty with diverse research interests. Therefore, it’s pretty easy to find someone to mentor you in your area of interests. On the clinical side, at Yale you train at several different sites. This allows me to have exposure to a variety of psychopathology, cultures, races, income status, educational backgrounds, and healthcare systems.”
