Hi everyone,
The ACGME requires program leadership to meet with every resident, one-on-one, twice-a-year. Mandates aside, we love these meetings.
You’ll meet once with me and once with your APD, ideally months apart. My order is 2s first, 1s second, 3s third. Here’s what we discuss:
- Milestones: We’ll review your progress on the ACGME milestones and specifically, whether you’re on target for promotion and graduation. If you’re not, we’ll discuss the concerns and solutions.
- Self-Reflection and Opportunities for Growth: We want to know how you think you’re doing and how you want to grow (e.g., procedures, knowledge, readiness to become a senior).
- ITE Score: We’ll discuss your score if it’s back, including areas needing work.
- Step 3 Status: Just to check; ideally, you should complete Step 3 by the end of internship.
- Study Plans: We’ll review the options: MKSAP, UWorld, NEJM Clinician, UpToDate, journals, podcasts, conferences, and more.
- MedHub Tasks: Are you submitting work hours and peer, attending, and service evaluations on time? If yes, thanks! If not, we’ll discuss.
- Procedural Competency: We want all categorical residents to be signed off on ABGs, paracenteses, and PIV placement by the end of internship. We’ll address how to meet these expectations.
- Scholarship: We expect everyone to pursue scholarship, broadly defined: research, QI, or developing educational curricula. If you’re already engaged, you can share updates. If you’re seeking projects and mentors, we’ll review options.
- Citizenship, Service, and Extracurricular Activities: We also expect everyone to pursue leadership opportunities, again broadly defined: committees (Executive Council, PEC, Welcoming Committee, GMEC), interest groups, distinctions, wellness activities, The Beeson Beat, Arts Night, etc.
- Wellness: We want to ensure you’re eating, sleeping, exercising, and socializing, which are the pillars of wellness. To be an effective resident, you have to nurture yourself.
- Postgraduation Plans: We’ll discuss your dreams and plans—and how we can support you. If you’re pursuing fellowship, we’ll discuss your portfolio, particularly scholarship, leadership, letter writers, and potential programs. If you’re still figuring out your plans, we’ll discuss options.
- Workplace Safety and Inclusion: We’ll stop at nothing to ensure a safe, inclusive learning climate. If you have concerns, we need to know.
- Program Feedback: Come prepared and be honest. What are we doing well? What needs work? If you are an intern, I’ll ask about your seniors, and, if you’re a senior, I’ll ask about your interns. Who is particularly effective? Who needs support? Your feedback is priceless.
- Professional Goals: We’ll end by naming 3-5 professional and personal goals for the year: publish a paper, present at a conference, get signed off on central lines, hone your teaching skills, find a mentor, etc. Naming goals ensures accountability.
After we meet, I’ll send you a summary, which you can edit. The final copy goes into your permanent file in our residency database.
Meeting with everyone is a huge undertaking: 157 residents, an hour each. But I love meeting with you and can’t wait to start.
Enjoy your Sunday, everyone. This afternoon, I’m going to Citi Field to see the Mets play the Nationals. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be starting a week on MICU Green.
Mark
