January 22, 2024

Nicole Cepeda, LCSW, college care clinician at Yale College Community Care (TC3), and Britt Lewis, LCSW, director of care management at the Connecticut Mental Health Center, presented a poster at the 2024 National Multicultural Conference and Summit (NMCS) January 18 and 19 in Santa Fe, NM.

The title of their poster was, “The Impact of Cross-Racial Supervision: An Exploration.” This theoretical poster examines the minimization of respective racial backgrounds on the impact of therapeutic work when supervising behavioral health providers across racial lines.

Abstract:

What is the impact on cross racial supervision? Race is present in the proverbial room, and therefore, must be acknowledged and addressed. This theoretical poster examines the minimization of respective racial backgrounds, on the impact of therapeutic work when supervising behavioral health providers across racial lines. The identification of supervisory attention to discourse on issues of race is not new, yet the extant research scantly offers tangible steps or tools for how to engage in race conversations. To accurately evaluate supervisory cross racial dynamics, we must understand the impact of cross-racial relations and learn to navigate race-based conversations.
