Emergency Medicine Specimen Biobank (EMSB)

The Emergency Medicine Specimen Biobank (EMSB) is a novel Emergency Department (ED)-based biorepository designed to enhance the understanding of disease processes and facilitate groundbreaking discoveries in personalized medicine. With over 139.8 million emergency department (ED) visits in the US annually, the EMSB aims to provide investigators with access to patient samples and paired clinical data for a variety of conditions seen in the ED.

  • Our Mission

Our mission is to develop novel diagnostic and treatment strategies that improve patient outcomes through an enhanced understanding of disease processes. We aim to streamline the processes for consent and enrollment of patients in a variety of downstream research projects, thereby creating a unified and efficient system for medical research.

  • Our Objectives

To provide a robust platform for accessing patient samples and paired clinical data.

To support research that enhances the understanding of disease processes.

To facilitate groundbreaking discoveries in personalized medicine.

  • What the EMSB Offers

The EMSB offers a unique opportunity for researchers to access a diverse and comprehensive collection of patient samples. These samples are collected with consent and include:

    • An initial blood sample drawn and held at the time of IV insertion to allow for delayed consent in select populations.
    • Additional biospecimens include urine and/or saliva
    • Opportunities for collecting additional samples during over the course of a patient’s ED visit or associated hospitalization.
    • Opportunities for collecting additional samples at return visits to the ED.
    • Blood samples are processed into plasma, DNA, RNA, and SMART Tubes
  • Who We Are

We are a dedicated team of researchers and medical professionals committed to advancing the field of emergency medicine and acute care through innovative research. Our team is involved in obtaining consent, collecting samples, and ensuring ethical standards are upheld throughout the research process. We collaborate closely with ED staff to ensure seamless integration of research activities into routine medical care.
