Wilderness Medicine

The Wilderness Medicine fellowship is a 1-year program that provides the core content of medical knowledge and skills in being able to plan for and to provide care in an environment that is limited by resources and geographically separated from definitive medical care in all types of weather and evacuation situations. The fellow will be supported to attain certification with the Diploma in Mountain Medicine as well as becoming a leader and an advanced instructor in the growing specialty of wilderness medicine.   • You will be financially supported to attain certification with the Diploma in Mountain Medicine, which will include a mountain medicine course, guided glaciated alpine ascent in conjunction with a glacier course, and completing a Level 1 Avalanche course.

  • You will become an advanced instructor and course director for wilderness education courses, to include Advanced Wilderness Life Support across the United States and possibly internationally.

  • You will attend the Wilderness Medical Society’s Wilderness and Mountain Medicine Course and begin the process to becoming a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.

  • You will be a faculty advisor for the Wilderness Medicine Area of Concentration for the Yale EM Residency and the Wilderness Medicine Interest Group for the Yale School of Medicine.

  • You will be funded to undergo additional training in wilderness medicine to meet your specific goals.

  • You will have a specific curriculum in wilderness toxicology.

  • The fellowship offers an appointment as a Clinical Instructor to the faculty of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine. Fellows are entitled to the faculty benefits package, four weeks of vacation, and a competitive salary.

  • Clinical responsibilities include 18-hours weekly at any/all of the three Yale- New Haven Hospital EM sites: York Street Campus, St. Raphael’s Campus and Guilford Shoreline free-standing ED.

  • Applicants must be residency trained and board certified/qualified in Emergency Medicine.
