Broad's presentation judged best among fellows at ASAM Educational

May 19, 2017

Kathleen Broad, MD, a fellow in the Yale Department of Psychiatry’s Addiction Psychiatry program, won the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Educational competition for best presentation by a fellow.

The title of Broad’s slideshow presentation was “Wet, Damp or Dry: Understanding Alcohol Regulation in the Canadian Arctic.”

The competition was held May 17 at the Connecticut State Medical Society in North Haven.

Broad presented her experiences of providing psychiatric outreach to a fly-in “dry community” in Nunavut, Canada, during her psychiatric residency at University of Toronto.

She presented on how these educational experiences impacted her decision to seek further training in Addiction Psychiatry at Yale, and how the fellowship will assist her in providing evidence-based treatment for alcohol use disorder in her future role as a consultant psychiatrist with the Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Canada).

The competition is held annually at the ASAM Educational, and is open to residents and fellows in the Connecticut region, which includes Massachusetts. The purpose of the competition is to increase awareness about how addiction presents itself in medical specialties. Participants were instructed to answer the question, “How does addiction impact your patients in your clinical setting?”

In April, Broad traveled to New Orleans to attend the ASAM Annual Conference. She was chosen to receive an ASAP Ruth Fox Scholarship to pay for her travel and accommodation expenses, and registration fees at the conference.

ASAM is a professional society that represents over 4,300 physicians, clinicians, and associated professionals in the field of addiction medicine.
