Department of Pathology Mission Statement

The Department of Pathology at Yale, one of the first departments organized at the Yale School of Medicine, is dedicated to continuing its history of world-renowned clinical care, innovative and impactful scientific research, and rigorous training of the next generation of pathologists and scientists.

We are committed to building and maintaining a supportive community where students, faculty, trainees, and staff are supported in their professional development and intellectual endeavors. We strive to create an inviting environment and institutional culture of inclusivity, where every individual’s unique background is valued and respected.

We have a diverse team of faculty, research scientists, and trainees who pursue research investigations, teach exciting programs, and provide exceptional clinical patient care. We strive to bring new knowledge and innovative therapeutic approaches to our patients and medicine. Our dedication to excellence in both clinical and academic arenas is paramount to our encompassing mission of advancing patient care through expert diagnostics and novel therapeutics.

Department of Pathology Diversity, Inclusivity, Culture and Equity and Engagement (DICE) Committee Statements

Mission Statement

The mission of the Diversity, Inclusivity, Culture, Equity, and Engagement Committee (DICE) is to work collaboratively to advocate and support diversity in our department, to encourage opportunities for all members to grow in their own understanding of diversity, and to promote equality of opportunity for all. With the support of department leadership, the Committee advises and recommends policy and practice on issues related to diversity consistent with Yale’s medical school guidelines and policies. Ultimately, the committee aims to provide the leadership necessary guidance to ensure that all people are valued and respected within the Dept. of Pathology as evidenced by equity in policies and procedures.

Vision Statement

The vision for the DICE is to ensure a welcoming climate for all students, trainees, faculty and staff in the department. We firmly believe that we can best promote excellence by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of students, faculty and staff and by creating a climate of respect that is supportive of their personal and professional growth. This climate for diversity, inclusion and excellence is critical to attaining the best research, scholarship, teaching, health care and other strategic goals of the department. Further, we recognize that the responsibility for excellence, diversity and inclusion lies with all of us in the department: leadership, administration, faculty, staff and students.

Scope and Goals

The purpose of this committee is to devise a plan that will improve diversity, engagement, inclusivity and equity in the Department.

  • Review data to summarize the current climate in the department, especially as they pertain to minority and socially disadvantaged groups
  • Review literature and best practices for DICE improvement
  • Devise a plan with short term and long-term goals and benchmarks for DICE
  • Provide guidance on educational activities that will promote DICE in the department
  • Assist with planning and creating a DICE curriculum for the department
  • Evaluate the DICE plan at predetermined intervals to determine progress and offer recommendations for revision
  • This committee is an advisory committee, and does not adjudicate disagreements
