Emergency & Trauma Radiology Section

About Us:

Clinical

We read all imaging studies ordered from the Emergency Rooms other than MRIs. All reads are final reads as we are staffed with on-site attending coverage 24/7 with overlapping attending coverage during busy hours. We have a high volume of CTs, X rays, US and a few occasional fluoroscopic studies. We read on-site from the two main campuses which are the York Street Yale New Haven Hospital and Saint Raphael’s Hospital.

We cater to ER’s of varying severity levels: York Street is a Level 1 trauma and stroke center while Saint Raphael’s, Milford Hospital and Shoreline Medical Centers are busy ERs but not Level 1. We also provide radiology services to the West Haven VA overnight.

Facilities

We have two 64 slice scanners within the York Street ED. Between the other sites, we have a combination of two additional 64 slice scanners from different vendors, one 16 slice scanner and two Dual Energy Capable 192 slice scanners on which ER patients are scanned. These are in addition to the numerous scanners which handle both inpatient and outpatient requests.

The ER section provides inpatient imaging coverage after 11pm. During the evening hours, we have a minimum of two US technologists scanning at York street and at least one at Milford and Shoreline which gives an estimate of the volume of cases available to learn from. Fellows can gain ultrasound scanning experience if they prefer.
