Other Appointment Types

Secondary, coterminous, visiting, dual, and joint appointments acknowledge the roles that faculty play in roles and/or departments other than their primary department.

There are situations where faculty are active in more than one role and/or department and secondary, coterminous, visiting, dual, and joint appointment may be appropriately considered. The related considerations are presented below.

Secondary Appointments within YSM

Description:

Faculty who hold a primary appointment in one department may hold a secondary appointment in another YSM department. Secondary appointments acknowledge the contributions and role of a faculty member in the stated department. A secondary appointment or reappointment must not exceed the term in the primary department. If the primary rank is Professor, the term of the secondary appointment as Professor may not exceed 5 years.

Process:

To initiate a secondary appointment or reappointment, the secondary department initiates the Secondary Appt (Feb 2021) form and sends this to the faculty member’s primary department for chair’s signature. The signed form is returned to the secondary department for entry into Workday and a copy of the signed form should be emailed to OAPD.

Secondary Appointments between YSM and FAS/Other Professional Schools

Description:

Faculty who hold a primary appointment in a YSM department may hold a secondary appointment in Yale Faculty of Arts and Science or other Yale professional schools. Secondary appointments acknowledge the contributions and role of a faculty member in the stated department.

Process:

To initiate a secondary appointment or reappointment, the secondary department initiates the Secondary Appt (Feb 2021) form and sends this to the faculty member’s primary department for chair’s signature. The signed form is returned to the secondary department for entry into Workday and a copy of the signed form should be emailed to Faculty Administrative Services and YSM Faculty Affairs.

Coterminous Appointments

Description:

A faculty appointment in any rank or track may be designated as coterminous with employment at an affiliated institution, such as Yale New Haven Health, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Connecticut Healthcare System, Connecticut Mental Health Center, or the John B. Pierce Laboratory. Coterminous appointments are designated such at the time of appointment, reappointment, or promotion and upon approval of the dean’s office. Removal of coterminous designation from an appointment requires OAPD, BPO, Yale Corporation review/approval.

Coterminous positions are for YSM faculty with varying degrees of support from the affiliated institution without which they would not continue to be supported by YSM. If employed full time by the affiliated institution, the faculty member will not be eligible for benefits of those employed by YSM.

It is important to note that a coterminous appointment normally ends automatically upon termination of the other institutional appointment, without any notice, grievance rights, or similar provisions otherwise afforded by the Faculty Handbook. However, at the time of appointment, the dean, at the request of the chair of the candidate’s department, may offer a period of notice beyond the termination date of the other institution’s appointment not to exceed two years for those at the ranks of professor or associate professor without term, or one year for a faculty member at any other rank.

Departments may consider the Voluntary Faculty Ranks for candidates who are fully employed by affiliated organizations and who meet the criteria provided in the Department’s Voluntary Faculty Guidelines.

Process:

The usual appointment process should be followed for the YSM rank being considered for any coterminous appointment. For example, an appointment as associate professor, coterminous with the VA, requires an approved RFP, search form, offer letter, and A&P and BPO approvals.

Visiting Research Faculty Appointments

The Visiting Research Faculty Application may be used to invite individuals to Yale to collaborate with Yale faculty in instances in which a presence on campus and access to Yale laboratory facilities are necessary. The application needs to be completed, submitted, and approved by OAPD before extending a formal invitation to the candidate.

A signed copy of the Research Attachment must also accompany the submitted Visiting Research Faculty application. If the individual is employed by a for-profit institution, a Visiting Scientist Agreement may be required in lieu of a Research Attachment.

Summary of Eligibility Requirements
Visiting Research Faculty should:
  1. Have an MD and/or PhD or have equivalent training.
  2. Have two or more years of research experience following the MD or PhD.
  3. Have demonstrated a high professional ability in fields related to the work being proposed.
  4. Hold a position at another university or at a company and should be coming to Yale parttime or for a short duration.
  5. Have an outside source of salary support (personal funds cannot be used).
  6. Have health insurance coverage.
  7. Be in residence at Yale during the appointment.

Important Considerations
  1. Appointees are not Yale employees, cannot be paid from Yale-administered funds, and do not receive fringe benefits from Yale.
  2. Appointees will need to show evidence of health insurance and external funding.
  3. Appointments are for a maximum term of 1 year; with approval, the appointment can be renewed once.
  4. Appointees must complete research compliance and safety training prior to entering the lab.
  5. Information is available for a health insurance program for incoming international visitors to campus (including plan operation, coverage, cost, and description information)

For more information, please consult the Yale University Faculty Handbook for Visiting Fellow and Visiting Research Faculty.

Dual Appointments

Descriptions:

Dual appointments are for individuals with both a faculty appointment and a appointment as a managerial or professional employee. In these cases, one appointment is primary and the other is secondary. In rare cases, and individual can hold a fully joint appointment.

Process:

This designation is normally made either at the I time of hire or are the time the secondary appointment is made, but it may be done at any time by the Dean or Provost.

Joint Appointments

Descriptions:

Joint appointments may be made in select circumstances. Faculty with such appointments have full appointments in two or more Yale departments. The faculty member is expected to fully participate in all of the expectations of each of the departments to which they are appointed.

Process:

For fully joint appointees, approval of the Office of the Dean is required. The full appointment process must then be pursued in both of the departments.
