DEI Educational Offerings

Resources for Teams

SM offers training to any working group, team, committee or class. These training courses offer tools to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. They offer the space to dialogue about ways the team wants to change the norms and culture of their workplace.

We offer education for teams or work units, not individuals. All classes will be tailored to the group’s culture and needs. Most classes can be done in-person or over Zoom. Sessions are led by Carli Gaughf, YSM Associate Director of DEI Training.

Trainings

  • Implicit Bias in the Hiring Process

Examines the ways that bias can prevent committees from finding and assessing great candidates. Surveys best practices for running an equitable search process. (60 to 90 minutes)

  • Bystander Intervention

Interactive practical workshop for groups who have studied intervention techniques in microaggressions and other harmful behaviors and desire to practice these skills. Involves roleplay. (90 minutes)

  • LGBTQ Allyship

Focus on understanding LGBTQ+ terms, LGBTQ+ identity development and history, and simple strategies for building an inclusive environment and being an LGBTQ+ ally. (90 to 120 minutes)

  • Theatre for Healthcare Equity

This workshop uses a theatre-based methodology to give participants the opportunity to rehearse interventions in difficult encounters, conversations, and conflict. The playfulness of theater opens the door for participants to creatively explore possible solutions to scenarios of bias and discrimination. Participants are given the space to safely and thoughtfully deconstruct relationship dynamics, power structures, and prejudices. Can be tailored to various scenarios that a group wants to work through, either with colleagues, students, or patients. (2+ hours)

  • “Doing the Work” DEI Learning Continuum

For groups who want to go on a deeper journey into culture change. Takes a group from the understanding social identity, implicit Bias and microaggressions to direct allyship, shifting group norms, and policy change. (6 hours over multiple sessions)

  • Additional Topics

In addition, certain topics can be taught by request, including Microaggressions, Power and Privilege, Navigating Difficult Conversations, and Creating an Inclusive Environment.
